Por que importa

O ataque threatens civil navigation and commercial shipping in the Black Sea. The CONTSHIP JET suffered serious damage, caught fire, lost more than 20 containers and remained afloat while drifting. In response, Bulgaria, Romania and Türkiye condemned the attacks and strengthened regional coordination, while Türkiye warned Russia and Ukraine and reserved the right to take legal action.

O que aconteceu

On 28 October, three maritime drones attacked the Liberian-flagged container ship CONTSHIP JET in Bulgaria's Black Sea exclusive economic zone. The ship was approximately 21 nautical miles, or 39 kilometres, southeast of Shabla, near Cape Kaliakra. It was sailing from Haifa to Constanța with about 700 containers aboard. The crew sent a distress signal at 12:00 and abandoned the vessel on rafts less than 15 minutes later. Bulgarian rescue services, the Maritime Administration, Navy, Air Force and Border Police evacuated all 18 crew members, including four Ukrainians and 14 Filipinos, and took them to Varna. Nobody was killed or injured. The vessel caught fire, sustained serious damage to its starboard side, tilted sharply and lost more than 20 containers. By 15:20 Kyiv time, it remained afloat and was drifting south. The attack was reported as the fifth such incident involving a vessel in Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone.

O que dizem as fontes ucranianas

Ukrainian coverage emphasizes the repeated attacks on commercial shipping and the danger posed to Ukrainian and foreign seafarers. It also highlights Ukraine's denial of involvement. Zelensky said Ukrainian forces had not conducted operations near Bulgaria and described the incident as a Russian combined maritime and aerial drone operation, although responsibility for this specific attack was not established.

O que dizem as fontes internacionais

International coverage presents the incident as part of a broader wartime threat to Black Sea navigation. Reporting focuses on the ship's Liberian flag, its route from Haifa to Constanța, the safe evacuation of all 18 crew members and coordinated regional measures to protect shipping. Türkiye warned both Russia and Ukraine against further attacks on commercial vessels and called for commercial shipping to leave the conflict zone.

Onde as versões divergem

Sources disagree about the year of the incident: most identify 28 October, while some specify 28 October 2024 and others 28 October 2026. There is also a discrepancy in the stated distance from the Bulgarian coast: most reports place the attack about 21 nautical miles, or 39 kilometres, southeast of Shabla, while one report places it about 17 nautical miles east of Cape Kaliakra.

Contexto

The attack followed a series of incidents affecting commercial vessels in October, including the sinking of Chelsea 3 near Bulgaria and Khoryv near Romania. It occurred during a meeting of the defence ministers of Bulgaria, Romania and Türkiye in Sofia. Bulgaria had previously asked NATO for combat aircraft, missile systems and counter-drone capabilities because of repeated attacks on shipping. The three countries also conduct a joint Black Sea demining operation and agreed to focus on protecting critical underwater infrastructure. Earlier, Kyiv had proposed through intermediaries that Russia halt attacks on civilian Black Sea targets, but Moscow refused.
